'Seatransporter-LNG' is an IACS CSR compliant fuel efficient dual fuel (LNG and MGO – HFO ready) handysize bulk carrier equipped with a 2,400-m3 LNG fuel tank, which allows approximately 100 days voyage powered by LNG. The design meets IGF code, SIGTTO, and ISO requirements for bunkering and safe handling of LNG onboard, and allows for seamless switching of power between fuels. The design received Approval in Principle (AIP) from ABS in 2014.
The design allows for either Type-C or exoskeleton type membrane LNG containment system. Hazard identification (HAZID) studies for the design were conducted in Bonn, Germany, in the presence of a multi-disciplinary team made up of individuals from Algoship, SEDS, GTRC, TGE, representatives of a potential owner, including an associate from Bernard Schulte Ship management, and ABS.
A simulation tool named "LNG fuel manager" was developed to predict the behavior of LNG and BOG in the tank throughout the 100-day voyage, considering the usage patterns of the LNG and BOG consumers onboard. The tool helps monitor the variation of pressure and temperature inside the tank, LNG composition variation, LNG density and fuel quality in terms of the methane number throughout the simulated voyage; further, its smart features engage and disengage cryo-coolers, depending on preset operational parameters. The LNG fuel manager can also simulate a deadship condition, with all LNG and BOG consumers gone silent – a very useful feature in discussions with statutory bodies, as it can demonstrate that the design has sufficient flexibility for pressure buildup and a controlled venting-off, if required.
