ENERGY EFFICIENCY EXISTING SHIP INDEX (EEXI)

ENERGY EFFICIENCY EXISTING SHIP INDEX (EEXI)

What is EEXI

INDEX INDICATING ENERGY EFFICIENCY OF EXISTING SHIPS.

The 75th session of the IMO Marine Environmental Protection Committee (MEPC) agreed amendment to MARPOL Annex VI conventions. The amendment would require ships to combine technical and operational approach to reduce their carbon intensity and introduced the Energy Efficiency Existing Ship Index (EEXI).
This is in line with the IMO’s ambition to reduce carbon intensity of International shipping by 40% by 2030 compared to 2008.

ENERGY EFFICIENCY EXISTING SHIP INDEX (EEXI)

EEXI is developed as a goal based measure in an easily enforceable way, which allows the vessel owners/operators many options to meet the requirement as long as such options are verifiable and controllable.
If a ship prefers saving capital cost, the ship can choose the shaft/engine power limit to the optimum level.
If a ship prefers higher speed, the ship can choose installing energy saving devices (Eg; Optimally- designed propellers) (or) switching to alternative fuels (Eg; LNG, blending with Biodiesels or Co-combustion with Hydrogen gas). Various measures to be taken depend on ship's capacity, speed, type etc.
SEDS OFFERS EEXI- RELATED SERVICES WITH OPTIMALLY ENGINEERED SOLUTIONS IN LINE WITH IMO REGULATIONS.

EEXI Calculation

The attained Energy Efficiency Existing Ship Index (EEXI) is a measure of a ship’s energy efficiency determined as follows:

EEXI Calculation

Approach of EEXI calculation can be 'Ship specific' or 'Fleet wide'. Fleet wide approach helps owners to develop fleet according to comparison of performance of each ship.
Based on the attained EEXI value and Client’s interest, we offer various measures for improving energy efficiency of vessel to meet IMO requirements.

Feasibility Study on Measures

SEDS can perform feasibility studies of selected measures based on client requirements.
Feasibility study should be performed in order to develop designs achieving the optimum balance of;

  • Energy efficiency
  • Vessel speed & Power
  • Investment & Operational cost
  • Payback period

Analysis of Improvement Measures

SEDS can perform various analysis methods to find out the effects of modification proposed in vessels.

  • Vibration analysis
  • Shock analysis
  • Noise analysis
  • FEA

EEXI Technical File

The new International Energy Efficiency (IEE) Certificate is required for every ship. This refers to EEXI Technical file which requires Class Approval.
