Alternate Fuel Retrofits

Alternate Fuel Retrofits

The shipping industry has a pivotal role in a net zero carbon future. International Maritime Organization has set ambitious goals of having greenhouse gas (“GHG”) emissions by 2050.
Looking at the future with the IMO low-sulphur standards and upcoming CO2 emission regulation, the share of conventional oil-based ship fuels will drop and the share of alternative fuels such as LNG, Ammonia, Methanol etc. will grow. Alternate fuel availability, bunkering infrastructure, extensive on-board modifications are the main challenges for the maritime community.
SEDS India Ltd. with its vast experience and qualified engineers have developed ship design that can be retrofitted to any alternate fuel option with limited on-board modification.
The Vessel is originally designed with LSHFO/MGO fuelled main engine and provided with LSHFO/MGO fuel tanks to meet the required endurance. The Vessel’s arrangement and space distribution is designed in such a way that it can be retrofitted to work on selected alternate fuel with minimum structural modifications. This is ensured by the following key aspects:

  • Space allocation for future fuel tank without affecting the cargo volume and cargo handling
  • Clearly defined tank re-location plan for after retrofitted case so that the Vessel can meet the trim and stability requirement without any ballast after retrofitting
  • Trim & Stability and strength requirements verified for before and after retrofit case
  • Main engine suitable for retrofitting to burn alternate fuel in addition to LSHFO
  • Generator capacity suitable for running at sea after alternate fuel retrofit on one generator

Alternate fuel retrofit designs are done in accordance with the requirements of Classification society and flag state requirements for various alternate fuel ready notations.
